End of Season Recap

Add some more info about this item...

The GBDGA season has come to a close and as predicted, it was one for the record books.  Despite all the challenges that this year has presented, we have fought hard and persevered and we have become a better and stronger league because of it.  We also saw some huge jumps in play this year, Zach continues his reign of terror on the league (have you realized that this guy has won so many tournaments he doesn’t even get excited about celebrating anymore?), but new challengers seem to step up every tournament; Andrew Carver has found himself on a few lead cards after the first round, and maybe ending the season with a win is a sign of a return to major winning ways for Micah Wheeler, and that doesn’t even mention the new ways Doug has found to flex his forehand muscles (if only he stops taking putting lessons from Zach, Doug may be the threat to watch).  While this off season will bring with it sunless days and terrible weather, there is good news on the horizon too, a number of really interesting rule recommendations and changes have been put before the rules committee that may really change the face of the league for years to come.  That’s all we’ve got for now, so stay tuned, don’t forget to get those recommendations in for the rules committee if you’ve got them, and we can’t wait to get things started next year!

Wheeler Turns on the Gas

After what has been an admittedly disappointing and injury-laden season, Micah Wheeler came out to play and absolutely boat-raced the competition on Saturday.  Wheeler was parking so many drives he barely even needed to pull out the putter.  Simply put, Wheeler was steering the ship the whole tournament and never let go of the reins.  What was expected to the biggest risk-reward situation of the season on hole 36 never came to be, Micah drove deep of the island and could not have cared less because he knew he was still in the driver’s seat.  Bringing up the caboose was Michael Carlson, who had a long day out on the links, and could only be frustrated with his performance.  Overall, the course played tough and aggression was at an all time high, leading to some great scoring, but with risk and reward also comes the downside, the statistics aren’t available to us, but I have to think that this was the most OB we have seen in GBDGA history.  One golfer was so upset with his inability to land his disc on the fairway that he tried to see if Micah would be willing to DNF with him, Micah thoughtfully replied, “Why would I quit, I’m winning.”  All together, it was a beautiful day on the course, and biggest of congrats goes out to Micah for pulling out a great win.

Add one more to the exclusive Master's club

Nico Baron found himself in a dog fight with Zach Jaraczewski at Plamann Disc Golf Park in the 2020 GBDGA Masters. Both players came out on fire, shooting well on the first 18 holes and carrying that into the last 18. Nico Baron was able to hang on to win his first GBDGA Masters and dawning the Green Jacket and joining the club. Nico continues to climb up the standings ladder and with two tournaments left will it be enough to catch Zach Jaraczewski in the overall League championship? Lots of movement in the standings and with five tournaments in the book some scores could be locked in. As we come to the end of the GBDGA season, the participants are fighting hard to earn their placings and I can't wait to see how it all shakes out.

The King is Cassel!

As the season and weather heated up this weekend, so did our players, but setting himself apart as the hottest of them all was Doug Cassel.  Following an incredibly tight first round, Doug was able to hang on to his early lead as a part of a three way tie on our top card on the final 18, despite the best efforts of Nico Baron and Tommy Purdom.  The round culminated in a huge par save after a drive gone awry from the top of the world, solidifying Cassel’s score as a course best.  Following this major win, Doug has proven himself to be a real threat to take home this year’s league championship.  On the other end of the spectrum, David Schneider miraculously held on to a 7th place finish after a debilitating injury that would have caused lesser players to DNF.  Andrew Carver also has to be happy to return to GBDGA action following injury, though his finish was less than desirable.  Rounding out the bottom is Michael Carlson, whose round was epitomized by his best shot on the day, an unbelievable tree-kick ace . . . that unfortunately went into the wrong basket.  After the strong performances this weekend, I can’t wait to see what our players bring to the GBDGA Masters next month.

Double Feature Gave Zach a Double Win

The 2020 GBDGA Season got started back up with the Green Bay Open at Pinecrest Disc Golf Course. Zach Jaraczewski proved why one of the commissioners voted him top of the league, getting out to an early lead, weathering the heavy rain, and riding that wave to the finish, getting his second win of the season.
On day two of this double header, the competition was fierce. Competitors were able to fight through tired arms and the hot sun at Grignon Park, after one overtime hole between Zach Jaraczewski and Micah Wheeler, Zach won with a perfectly placed tee shot, earning his second victory of the weekend and his third of the season.
The League capped off this long weekend, with the Booming Long Distance Competition. Each player, with exhausted arms, hucked 2 discs down the Grignon hill. Each hoping for good flex and far flights, and when the measurements were taken it was determined that Mike Shiffer would take home the trophy and title of Long D champion. The GBDGA will be back to normal tournament scheduling starting in July. I look forward to seeing what more the competitors have to offer and if anyone will be able to take down Zach Jaraczewski in a tournament.

The 2020 GBDGA DAS BOOT Classic has been cancelled in order to open a weekend up for an individual point earning tournament. With the state of Wisconsin calling for an extended safer at home order the members of the GBDGA have voted to cancel the GBDGA DAS BOOT Classic opening up that weekend for a never before done double feature. The GBDGA Green Bay Open is to be held on Saturday June 20th, followed the next day by a happy fathers day GBDGA Subaru Classic. This is sure to be a great test to our competitors who will not have had tournament play in 5 months.

The King of Legion is Back

It was a grueling morning at Legion Park as the 2020 GBDGA season kicked off in frozen fashion. The earlier start did not show itself to be kind from the Shotgun forward. With a fresh layer of snow on the ground The competitors fought hard to find their footings as well as their discs. In the end the true king of Legion prevailed, Zach Jaraczewski showed that no one can match his play winning his 11th tournamnet of his career and his first in the 2020 season. WIth a Major approaching the GBDGA players will have to step up their game in hopes of purusing victory and the evasive Triple Crown.
